Custom Moire for Chateau Puynard
Designed by 2 Lovely Gays, Moire is a hand-tufted rug inspired by the discovery of an old fabric swatch in the couple's restoration of their south east London Victorian home. Striking a chord with a long-standing customers and owners of the Chateau Puynard vineyard in Bordeaux, we were commissioned to turn the original design into something fitting for this beautiful home.
As it comes, the Moire design is perfect for most homes, but in the grand setting of the historicChateau Puynard vineyardwe needed to make sure that it remained in perfect proportion, so we enlarged its delightful pattern to a fitting scale. Once Andrew and Naomi had settled on a truly magnificent teal colourway to highlight the subtle tonal design, production got underway. Hand-tufted in India from a gorgeous combination of wool and bamboo silk - the latter to give a beautiful iridescence - this custom creation took some 10 weeks to complete, before being shipped to London for inspection then on by air freight to France.
With a column in the middle of the rug's resting place, we knew that getting the perfect fit would be a challenge and so drafted in one of the most experienced installers we know, who just so happens to be our founder Simon's brother, what better way to ensure a perfect job than relying on family?
Such a striking centrepiece was always going to draw the eye and so precision was the key to ensuring a first-class finish. The gigantic 4.4 x 5.5m rug was carefully cut before being invisibly stitched back together and the result is truly extraordinary. We simply love challenges like this and the finished article speaks for the attention-to-detail and craft of everyone involved.
