Cutting ties with an old rug is sometimes inevitable, where it goes next is vital.

Although our rugs are durable enough to last a length of time, there will be some situations where you’ll be looking for a way to dispose of a rug.

At the moment, we don’t currency offer a buyback scheme, it is something that we’re looking into. In the meantime, here’s some suggestions on how to do this in the most sustainable way possible and to avoid textile waste ending up in landfill.

Perhaps jumping into buying an entirely new rug isn’t totally needed, could it be the case of giving an old rug a new lease of life? Our friends at Classic Rug Care are absolute experts in all things rug care & maintenance, so do get in touch with them directly to see what can be done with your existing rug.

This is a more cost effective and sustainable option, a good quality rug can last generations if it’s given the right care.

2_Resell

Give it a new home. Provided that the rug is in a condition (perhaps a bit of a clean beforehand will add value if you’re hoping to sell) so that someone else can enjoy it, you can resell or just give it away via a trusted online platform.

Vinterior is an interior specific platform, great for all things home furnishings.

Freecycle is a good one for giving away the rug to someone for free in your community.

A really positive way of giving a rug a longer life, although it may not be as simple as taking clothes to a charity shop because not everyone will accept a rug especially if it’s oversized.

Here’s a couple who do take rug donations:

London: Furnishing Futures

UK: British Heart Foundation

If the rug is totally past the point of any of the previous steps, it’s only then that recycling should be considered. Rugs & carpets can be broken down into fibers and reused for numerous products including underlay and materials used for gardening.

It’s really important to make sure that the rug is going to the right place in order for it to be recycled, taking it to the dump could mean that it’ll just end up in landfill. It’s at this point that you can get in touch with Anglo Recycling, who are helping to close the loop on carpet waste.
