Abigail Weston

Student of Central St Martins, Abigail Weston, is the winner of our Student Design Competition for the 10th annual Wool Week, an initiative from Campaign for Wool to celebrate the very best of student design across interiors, clothing and textiles.

Abigail's rug is inspired by the University's Kings Cross location, drawing reference from the brickwork left by the area's industrial heritage. We were seriously impressed by her powerful use of colour and the mark making translations of the detail found in one wall that caught her attention. We've spent the last 12 weeks turning Abigail's design into rug reality in readiness for the launch of Wool Week.

"I wanted to highlight the multitude of colours found within this brickwork, created by the material itself and by left behind paintwork. The brickwork I photographed as part of my research provided the basis for a vibrant colour pallette. I also wanted to draw attention to the textured surfaces that I found, seemingly from weathering or from man-made scrapes.

I experimented with mark making using bricks found at home, using the bricks themselves to transfer pattern and texture onto paper. I enjoyed the unpredictable nature of this mark making. Part of my development focused on one particular textured wall I discovered during my research, and I experimented with torn paper to compose patterns representing these textures. I again enjoyed the unpredictable shapes and compositions achieved."
