Kaleidoscope: Modern Homes in Every Colour Book Launch

An ode to colourful homes that challenge conventions by interior journalist Amy Mooreau Wong

Exploring homes that push the boundaries on colour choices.

When Amy Moorea Wong, interior design journalist, set out to explore houses that exacerbated colour in every essence of the word.

It made perfect sense that the home of FLOOR_STORY founder Simon Goff and his partner Emma Morley, director of trifle* came into mind.

Each home featured in the book is a real, lived in space decorated to serve for the everyday. It’s exactly this that makes flicking through this wonderful collection a total inspiration in the endless possibilities of introducing and honing in on colour and serves as an assuring guide to open your door and let the colour in.

The outstanding photography by Simon Bevan provides a ‘glorious gallery of these spaces’, paying homage to those who avoid the safety of a neutral palette and in doing so have gone against the grain.

Simon and Emma

Amongst these stunning images, you’ll spot Simon and Emma’s home, notable for having several bold and colourful rugs from the FLOOR_STORY collection. Simon has chosen some of his favourites which include the painterly illustrated Giovanni rug by John Booth, the colour guru and the Art Deco style Marmalade rug by Carmelllia Indriawati, notable for its scalloped edging and incredibly detailed repeat motif. Both of these rugs lay on a wooden, black-painted floor which creates the perfect backdrop to really lets the textural hand-made rugs pop.

The iconic 4AM shaped rug by Henry Holland hangs on a pink wall, they decided to have a custom colourway made so that the pink eyes match perfectly with the wall paint. There’s also some up-cycled vintage runners in the kitchen, perfect for adding some detail and comfort to a space with heavy footfall.

The transition from room to room is full of surprises, as Simon and Emma mentioned in the book ‘you’re able to really transition from one very different space to another through the use of colour’. As you walk through the stylish and moody pink walled and black floored living space, full of contemporary art collectables. You’d assume that this would be a continuous vibe throughout the space but as you enter the kitchen at the back of the house the aesthetic evolves into a radiant open space full of greenery and natural textures such as terracotta flooring and a bamboo hanging chair.

A sense of unity has been created between the spaces in the beautifully balanced and contrasting textures along with the natural progression in the accents of colour from room to room. Where teal begins as a subtlety in one space, becomes the focal point in the next, like a story is unfolding before your eyes. It's these clever colour choices that makes Emma such a notable interior designer, you can really feel the style of trifle creative in these spaces, it’s wonderful to see this style translate from workspace into the home.

"

It’s a big honor to be in a printed book, included amongst some truly amazing spaces including our neighbors Earl of East and a couple of our clients, a huge thank you to Amy.
