EAST LONDON-BASED ILLUSTRATOR, CERAMICIST AND ARTIST JOHN BOOTH IS A POLYMATH OF CREATIVITY

Copenhagen-based visual artist Signe Emdal is known for innovative weaving techniques and is represented in the permanent collections of Malmø Art Museum in Sweden and The collection of the Danish Art Foundation. The carpet loom is at the core of Signe’s process, an object that is interlinked with memories and works as a continuous loop of mind and motion.

Signe’s archive of textural woven sculptures and tapestries are a display of vibrancy, volume and breathtaking colour combinations, such as those from the Loop (2020) and Ecdysis (2024) series. A deep thinker, the techniques explored throughout her work are linked with themes of femininity and cultural history.

Working on site-specific pieces alongside her exhibition showcases, Signe has mastered how textiles interplay with spaces derived from cultural heritage. It is through this expertise that Emdal is able to create highly unique work that fuses weaving processes, a unique illustrative style with material tactility.

Signy [rug] really is a testament to the amazing artisans in Nepal that have breathed beauty into my work through their exquisite abilities and true understanding of their craft.

IN CONVERSATION WITH SIGNE EMDAL

What’s your favourite design period and why?

I would say that my favourite period is way before the word design was even a word ;) Ancient Egypt and Indigenous Art fx, is both a great inspiration aesthetically and philosophically.

Where do you go to get inspired?

I have a myriad of interests that inspires me, but some of my core pillars in my body of work, would be Natural light, Structures/Systems, Cosmos and The sky is the limit kind of mindsets

What’s the thing that helps you to kickstart your day?

I sit in meditation every morning.

What’s your favourite object that you own?

My pen and my analogue vintage camera.

Who’s work would you most like to see in person? (dead or alive)?

I would like to attend the solo show openings of all the historical amazing female artists who never had a show.

If you could only make art with one tool, what would you choose?

A vertical loom.

Name a hue that embodies a bit of you?

I am not much of a Solid colour person... I LOVE subtle nuances, melange and mixes of many yarns blended into one yarn... like with music.

Timeless Modernity

This piece creates a sense of tranquility while adding strength and balance through its beautiful hand-knotted craftsmanship.

To celebrate 10 years of collaborations, FLOOR_STORY asked Illustrator John Booth to reimagine one of his rug designs. We'd been talking about a blue tonal version of Giovanni for a while and this presented the perfect opportunity to bring a vision to life.

A new energy has been brought into the design through the combination of colours of blue. Each shade balances the other to create a high contrast version that’ll sit happily on the floor or wall of many spaces. The shaped outline brings the illustrative style seamlessly into the space, a great way to mix up the norm of rectangular rugs.
