This four-part series of playful, collage-inspired rugs has been the outcome of a project between Crafts Council, FLOOR_STORY and Halina Edwards. The rugs themselves are based on the original artworks made by children and parents/guardians during a creative workshop, facilitated by Artist and Educator Halina Edwards. The project resulted in a collection of colourful hand knotted rugs which will be homed in Crafts Councils gallery space based in Angel.

The workshop was part of the Crafts Council’s participation programme, which aims to connect local families and community groups to the Craft’s Council’s new gallery space through artist-led workshops and co-creation projects.

"

‘It was exciting to see how they responded to the textile examples I demonstrated, and how they completely ran with the techniques in their design.’

The Workshop

Halina directed the workshop by having a discussion with the participating children and parents/guardians about their thoughts and feelings about the use and purpose of the rugs and linking this back to contemporary culture. Halina showed a varied collection of FLOOR_STORY rug samples during the session to give a better understanding of what the outcome of the collaged artworks would become.

Creative Techniques

Creative Techniques

The creative process behind the artworks was explored through paper collage and by using techniques such as paper weaving and creating 3D elements with paper hole punches, these techniques have become visual staples within the finished rug designs.

From Collage to Weave

The 3D elements have been translated by creating alternating pile heights, giving another layer of visual interest. Following the workshop, the work was transformed into digital renders ready for production, combining various elements from the participants' designs.

‘These rugs are a playful way to shift the tone of the gallery environment into a welcoming family-friendly space.’
